One More Time with a Song – Wildwood Flower

This next song is one that everyone seems to learn at some point when they are working on Carter style or Cross-Picking. I figured I would run through all the steps on this beautifully simple and very popular tune. The song itself is rarely sung, but more often played as an instrumental.

So, what’s the first step? You guessed it–the basic melody and chords. Remember, if you don’t know the chords then you don’t really know the song, and if you don’t know the melody of the song, then you don’t really know the song. Always start there. Here’s the basic melody:

You can end there, too, and take it no further, and have all you need to play the song, but we’re going to take it to the next step: Carter Style (considering that the song was recorded by the Carter Family, and later June Carter, it seems apropos). Here we will add chord strums where the melody note is being held to create a Carter style arrangement: melody note – Strum – melody note – strum pattern. Here it is:

For ease of printing here are the PDFs Basic Melody, and Carter Style.

Now we have all the elements to create a cross-picking arrangement: both the basic melody, and the Carter Style version of the song. Stay tuned for the next session where I’ll convert the Carter Style into a Cross-Picking arrangement.
